Have you ever wondered what bone broth is and why it’s popping up in stores and cafes all around you? Yes, it’s a trend, but it’s hopefully a long lasting trend! Let’s dive into the benefits of sipping this tasty drink on the regular.
What is Bone Broth?
High quality organic bone broth is a magical liquid extraction of nutrients from the bones of healthy and happy animals that have given their lives for our nourishment. Instead of throwing away this valuable part of their being, we follow the practice of those that came before us and simmer the remaining nutrients out of the bones to nourish ourselves at a deeper level.
A 24+ hours process, bones from organic 100% grass-fed/finished cows, pasture-raised chickens, pigs or turkeys or wild-caught non-GMO fish are placed in clean filtered water to simmer with apple cider vinegar (aids in the extraction of minerals). Organic vegetables and herbs may be added for a richer flavorful broth. The longer the simmer often the greater the nutrient content.
Is Bone Broth Good For Me?
In short, yes. The list of benefits you can receive from adding this simple liquid into your diet on the daily is outstanding. An easily-digested nourishing source of amino acids, bone broth calms and stabilizes the body. It tells your nervous systems it’s safe by supplying many of the other nutrients also needed to run smoothly. For example, it’s rich in usable and healing collagen. If you haven’t heard, collagen is the most prevalent protein within our bodies and is a vital ingredient for the structure of our internal (intestinal lining, joints, tendons, bones, etc.) and external (skin, hair, nails, etc.) health. By increasing your intake of this potent broth, you are supplying your body with the ingredients needed to strengthen immunity, calm inflammation, stabilize function and allow healing to take place! If you wish to geek out like me and understand the depth of nourishment you will receive from high-quality bone broth, take a peruse of this informative article. You will want a cup immediately!
Autoimmune Diseases: for those that have alerted immune systems, I recommend proceeding with caution as it may be a bit intense. Start gently with an AIP approved broth like this one.
An egg allergy: if you are hypersensitive to eggs, I’d highly recommend being cautious with how much chicken you consume and this includes chicken broth.
How Much & Often Should I Drink Bone Broth?
If you like the flavor and taste of bone broth on its own then I recommend starting slowly with a steaming 6-8 oz cup every other day. Note how you feel. If it’s providing a steady grounded feeling and longer lasting energy, continue to increase your intake and frequency. Sipping on bone broth is a beautiful way to start your day. I personally enjoy 8-10 oz every morning. I LOVE it. If you are not keen on the flavor, first try other recipes or brands. If it’s still not captivating you, don’t be discouraged. Bone broth can be incorporated in many other fun and delicious ways. Try my go-to smoothie recipe! Use as a base for keeping roasts moist and flavorful. Cook sprouted grains like wild rice, quinoa and even oats in bone broth! It provides a satisfying savory flavor and improves the digestibility of the grains - another bonus! Simply use in place of water and simmer over low heat with a little butter or ghee until it’s reached the consistency you desire.
Do I Need to Make Bone Broth or Can I Buy It?
You can do both! I made it for a while and then honestly got burned out. I consume a lot, sooo it was a big task for me to keep up! I still do recommend trying to make it yourself first, if you enjoy cooking. Below are a list of my favorite recipe books for playing with and perfecting your own bone broth. If you find that it is too consuming as I did, then feel free to support a local maker or brand and delegate out! I share my favorite brands over here.
