Well, hello friend :). I thought we'd dive in and talk about nourishing your body from within today. There are numerous ways to heal, restore, and maintain topically with quality clean and well-sourced products. The problem is that these products never quite get to the root of the cause. They are simply treatments or as I like to consider them, enhancers.
Inner well-being is key to a lovely glowing appearance and radiant health. There are many ways to nourish and support the body's inner functions. We could talk for days and not even begin to cover all the various remedies, supplements, and dietary protocols available. I want to keep it simple and not go crazy on recommendations for you, so let's just talk about one of my favorite supplements for whole health. This little guy could change the future of your health.
Supplementing with Fermented Cod Liver Oil
I know. You read this title and thought, really? Yuck! Fermented fish oil (Cod, no less) is something I never imagined I'd be downing once a day. Yet, here I am, dutifully taking my 1 tsp each morning and thoroughly enjoying the benefits.
In case this is all new to you, cod liver oil has long been known to promote health by supplying high amounts of vitamin A and D—two vitamins our bodies could use a whole lot more of these days—and the highly-essential omega 3's (EPA/DHA—learn more about fats in this helpful article). This simple food provides the support our body needs to make healthy bones, prevent disease (Vitamin D deficiency has been proven to lead to numerous cancers, heart disease, depression, and more), balance hormones, promote healthy pregnancy and births, maintain clear and youthful skin, and keep the brain and nervous system running smoothly.
It was a precious food in traditional cultures. Remember my post about Weston A Price's book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration? It was one of the highly prized "superfoods" of those days. Our grandmothers, great grandmothers, and beyond took it regularly and can attest to its immune fortifying properties with their generations' far healthier genes. If you'd like to learn more about this highly nourishing food, I recommend reading Radiant Life's Blog here and here for a quick run down and then hop onto the Weston A. Price Foundation's website and search cod liver oil for deeper research.
As for my personal experience, I have two conditions known as PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) and Hypothyroidism. Both of these have given me a lovely basket of symptoms to manage and attempt to heal. One of these has been the health of my skin. I often would get bouts of very dry skin all over, break out in hives when I was too hot, and/or develop acne often on my face. Nooooo fun. Once I started addressing the root causes to these conditions I was able to make progress. One of the main supplementations that contributed to gaining back some skin balance (as well as healing many other symptoms) was taking fermented cod liver oil. This superfood provided the well-sourced nutrition my brain needed to properly hydrate and regulate my skin. I won't pretend that I'm perfect and completely symptom-free (it's always a journey), but I can definitely tell a difference when I'm taking it regularly and when I'm not.
Whatever your health status, I do highly recommend adding this valuable food into your daily regimen. Your immune system, skin, and general well-being will thank you for it!
If you're ready to give it a go, please require these three elements from any cod liver oil you choose to take:
+ High Quality Sourcing - Avoid any cod liver oil that has been heated or had vitamins extracted and added. Also avoid fillers or unnecessary ingredients, especially when in capsule form. My recommended brands that meet this criteria are below:
- Green Pastures Fermented Cod Liver Oil (I take the liquid cinnamon tingle flavor. Much more economical and the flavor helps!)
- Rosita Raw Cod Liver Oil
- Dropi Extra-Virgin Cod Liver Oil
+ Process - I personally prefer the fermented over the raw, as the fermentation process makes the vitamins more readily available and easier for my body to digest. If you'd rather try raw, this form still provides the incredible nutrients you want. There are only a few producers that provide high-quality raw cod liver oil. They're listed above.
+ Dosage - start small (1/4-1/2 tsp) and work your way up. The Weston A. Price Foundation recommends 1 teaspoon per day for a maintenance dose; 2 teaspoons per day for pregnant and breastfeeding women; and higher doses for short periods of stress. I'm currently taking 1 tsp in the morning. If you're feeling uncertain, here's another great post to guide you.
**Important note: Cod liver oil is best paired with high-quality pastured butter, so make sure you have that in your diet on a daily basis as well. If you want to make it easy, Green Pastures offers a cod liver oil with high-vitamin butter already in it.
I hope this little run down on a traditional super food has left you feeling enlightened and encouraged. I'd love to hear your experience if you give it a go! À votre santé!
