Awareness of the ingredients in our skincare, makeup, cleaning supplies, candles, etc. is slowly becoming "normal". Learning how to actually do something with this information and live a cleaner life amid our toxic world is not easy. It can feel overwhelming, yet I hope my discoveries and adventures in the beauty world can ease this a bit for you and provide a glimmer of light at the end of this tunnel.
Many of you have started changing up your skincare—telling me how wonderful your skin looks and feels after using the cleaner lines talked about on Merfleur. This brings me so much joy! In these conversations though, most of you have quickly followed up your glowing report with questions about makeup. You've looked in your makeup bag and discovered the same or higher levels of dangerous ingredients. I hear you. Let's start talking makeup!
Clean non-toxic makeup that actually works is not easy to come by, though each year it seems a new company or line pops up that further promotes the movement towards safer beauty. As I've made it a personal mission to only put the cleanest products I can find (or afford) on my skin, I do have a nice collection I can recommend. I'm always trying something new, so I'll try to keep you updated as I uncover other safe and clean options.
Today, I want to start with the simplest piece of your makeup regimen, mascara. There's actually a nice handful of effective options available. I've been trying clean mascaras for quite a few years, but I have four that I love and are my current go-to's. I've listed them below with ingredients, my experience, and suggest use tips. If you prefer a video review, check it out here. Alrighty...let's get started!
Clean Toxic-free & Effective Mascaras
+ Experience: This was my first try at clean mascara years ago and it has remained a favorite since that first swipe. It coats evenly and provides a thicker look to the lashes, easily lasting through the day. I've never had it smudge. It's a little tougher to take off, makeup remover or a face oil is required, face washes will struggle to remove it. A wonderful economical option, it's my recommendation for those switching over from toxic mascara.
+ Ingredients: Aqua, glycerin (vegetable), glyceryl stearate se, jojoba esters, tapioca starch, stearic acid ( vegetable), copernicia cerfera (carnauba) wax, euphorbia cerifera (candelilla) wax, arabic/acacia gum, acrylates, crosspolymer, potassium cetyl phosphate, microcrystalline cellulse (plant), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, panthenol (vitamin b), cellulose gum, gluconolactone, macrocystis pyifera (brown kelp) extract, hydrolyzed oryza sativa (rice) protein, sodium benzoate, iron oxides c1 77499.
+ Use Tips: Gently curl lashes. Start at roots, wiggling mascara back and forth along baseline, then swipe up from there to tips. Swipe a few more times to get tips fully. Pairs beautifully as a topper coat over the Lily Lola mascara for extra long-lasting wear.
+ Experience: This is the most nourishing and hydrating mascara I've ever tried. I maaaay just wear it during the day for this reason ;). It gives a beautiful natural look, as if you simply tinted your lashes. Smooth application, only caveat is that it does smear if you have moist skin or hooded eyes (like me).
+ Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Cera Alba (Beeswax)*,C10-18 Tryglycerides, Stearic Acid, Copernica Cerifera Cera / Copernicia Cerifera Cera (Canuba) Wax*, Castor Isostearate Beeswax Succinate, Glyceryl Stearate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Glycerin, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Benzoate, Xanthum Gum, Cellulose, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil / Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil [+/-Cl 77891 Titanium Dioxide, Cl 77491 and Cl 77499 Iron Oxides, Cl 77007 Ultramarines, Cl 74570 Carmine] *Ingredient from Organic Farming
+ Use Tips: Gently curl lashes. Start at roots and swipe to tips, repeat 3-4x. Makes sure to gently dust some of their bio brightener invisible powder under and above your eyes to prevent smudging.
**Keep a look out for a video on Well People's make up, coming soon!
+ Experience: This is a recent try! It definitely provides the long lasting model look—separating and extending the lashes beautifully while holding the curl. For my friends that need some extra support, the primer can provide extra conditioning and protection.
+ Ingredients: Mascara: Water (Aqua), Beeswax (Cera Alba), Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Castor Isostearate Beeswax Succinate, Acacia Senegal Gum, Cellulose, Glyceryl Behenate, Jojoba Esters, Tocopherol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetyl Palmitate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sorbitan Palmitate, Xanthan Gum, Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Sodium Benzoate, Cellulose Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Phytate, Phosphoric Acid, Iron Oxides (CI 77499). Primer: Water (Aqua), Beeswax (Cera Alba), Potassium Cetyl Phosphate, Glycerin, Jojoba Esters, Glyceryl Stearate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Acacia Senegal Gum, Cetyl Palmitate, Sorbitan Olivate, Sorbitan Palmitate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cellulose, Castor Isostearate Beeswax Succinate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Caprylyl Glycol, Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Sodium Benzoate, Xanthan Gum, Cellulose Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Phytate, Tocopherol, Phosphoric Acid.
+ Use Tips: Gently curl lashes. Start at roots and with a steady hand swipe to tips. Only 2 swipes are necessary, unless you like the clumpy look. If you are not a fan of the clumpy look, I recommend using a different wand (like Pacifica's or W3ll People's)
#1 | Lily Lolo Mascara
+ Experience: This is my most recent find. Reviews everywhere were glowing, so I finally took the plunge. The formula is long lasting. It perfectly marries the natural, tinted look with the slightly-clumpy/thick model look. The wand is pretty good too! My favorite wands are still Pacifica's and Well People's, but Lily's is definitely effective. All around a great everyday mascara!
+ Ingredients: aqua (water), myrica pubescens fruit cera (myrica pubescens fruit wax), propanediol, copernicia cerifera cera (copernicia cerifera (carnauba) wax), polyglyceryl-6 distearate, sucrose stearate, acacia senegal gum, glyceryl dibehenate, helianthus annuus seed cera (helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed wax), lactobacillus ferment bis-octyldodecyl dimer dilinoleate/propanediol copolymer, polyglyceryl-10 myristate, oryza sativa bran cera (oryza sativa (rice) bran wax), glyceryl caprylate, rosa canina fruit oil, argania spinosa kernel oil, xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, glyceryl undecylenate, [may contain ci 77499 (iron oxides)].
+ Use Tips: Gently curl lashes. Start at roots, wiggling mascara back and forth along baseline, then swipe up from there to tips. Only swipe 1-2x for a clean look or 3-4x for a dramatic clumpier look.
