As a young child, I was responsible for cleaning many parts of my home. I actually enjoyed certain aspects, but always found myself getting headaches and feeling sick from the strong pungent fumes of the cleaning solutions. I literally use to hold my breath sections at a time, stepping out of the room to get a breath of fresh air as often as I could.
Once I had my own home, I looked into alternative options, not willing to expose myself to any more chemicals. There were many brands claiming "natural", similar to body and food products, so the search began. I wanted truly clean options that would produce consistent results! I have since then tried many different brands ranging from 7th Generation to Trader Joe's to my own homemade solutions. I have a nice round up in my home and thought I'd share a few of my favorites with you.
These are not by any means the only great products available. They're simply my current favorites and go-to's because they are reasonably priced, high-quality, reliable, and, of course, beautiful to display in your home. Feel free to share your favorites too. I always love to learn about new brands and try new products!
Natural Cleaning Essentials & Favorites
+ Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap, I prefer lavender or peppermint
+ Mrs. Meyer's Dish Soap, my favorite scents are lemon verbena, radish, basil, and lavender
+ Glass Amber Bottles with Sprayer Cap, for any homemade cleaning concoctions
I also have a homemade solution I use for deep cleaning those extra fun surfaces. If you are feeling adventurous, give the concoction below a try. I create it from 3 simple ingredients often found around my home. It's so easy you don't have to be any sort of pro to whip it together. I love it and use it often!
Homemade Cleaning Solution
+ 1 tbsp Castile Soap
+ Equal parts White Vinegar and Water
+ Baking Soda, optional
Fill an empty spray bottle with castile soap. If I'm honest, I usually just eyeball this, but it's about 1tbsp or less. I'm not much of a measurer. Fill half of the bottle with white vinegar. Follow with the water, filling until you reach the bottom of the pour spout. Do not fill to the top of the spout—you'll need space for the water to rise when you add your sprayer cap. Screw the cap on tight and give the solution a few good shakes to mix the ingredients. Spray the surface and let sit for a minute. Optional: If deep cleaning is needed, like a toilet or bathtub, I like to follow my spray with a decent dusting of baking soda. Using a good scrubby, I will "exfoliate" the surface with strong circular motions... wax on, wax off my friends. Once the surface is well scrubbed, I rinse out my sponge and fill it up with warm water, squeezing out the warm water to rinse the solution off the surface, guiding the flowing water and solution towards a drain. Repeat 1-2 more times until surface is sparkling. To finish, wipe the surface down with a small cleaning towel and enjoy the satisfaction of an instant shine! Repeat on a weekly or biweekly basis.
Note: This solution is not intended to be used on wood or any other absorbent surface. Instead, think showers, tubs, counters, or toilette.
