Hair care, it's as varied as the types of hair in this world. There are firm believers for all approaches, so today I simply wish to share my own personal experience and rhythm. I have a lot of long fine straight hair, so do take that into consideration. If you possess the gorgeous wavy or curly locks I've always wanted, this entire routine may not be for you, but perhaps bits and pieces or different options from the brands I mention may guide you to some keepers!
Caring for long locks naturally has not always been easy. When I first transitioned, I often wished for the days of using average drugstore or even high-quality standard hair care products. Life was so much simpler. I didn't have to look at ingredient lists or consider how the products might affect my organs. I just used what smelled good and looked pretty. Switching to cleaner safer options was not only harder, but I was quickly disappointed with the results. The cleaner products I found at Trader Joe's, Target, or even my local health food store did not perform. They always left my hair heavy or extremely dry, sometimes even causing little breakouts along my hairline. Has anyone else experienced this? I quickly ditched those options and began searching for safe high-performance options.
I also used to spend a lot of time prepping my hair every morning—showering, blow drying, and styling. I always ran out of time! Thankfully, over the last few years, I've streamlined my hair care routine and found quicker and easier ways to keep it presentable and healthy. I can't be the only one who has struggled to find good natural products and a manageable routine, so today I'm sharing a glimpse into mine here in a little video and diving into my current favorite products below. Hopefully, these two resources will provide you with some helpful ideas and a few very viable options. Shall we get started? Hop on over to my channel, to begin with the video and then come back here to get the specific break down. Enjoy the watch and see you soon!
Natural Hair Care Tips & Routine
1 | Wash Less
+ I wash my hair 3x a week—I go every other day and then take one longer 3 day stint. It's tough, I know, but by washing your hair less you're giving your natural oils the opportunity to balance and protect your scalp and locks. Personally, I've noticed my hair starts to thin and dry out as soon as I start to shower more frequently.
2 | Use Non-Toxic Natural Products
+ If preventing hormone disruption, infertility, cancer initiation, or immune compromise is not enough to make you switch, then at least know that your scalp does and can work better with (good) natural products. I dive into my current favorite, safe products in my hair care video here and in the product breakdown below.
3 | Shower at Night
+ This is the biggest time and hair saver I've discovered! By showering at night, I avoid over-heating, over-brushing and over-producting my hair—giving it soft, healthy natural volume with one product and a simple trick that I share in my hair care video. It's been such a relief and I continually wake up with happy voluminous hair!
4 | Avoid Heat & Air Dry
+ Heat damages hair. We all know it and yet we still do it. I think it's because we're told that hair has to look a certain way in order to be acceptable. I'm all for looking presentable, but I highly encourage you to embrace your natural look. If your hair is straight, let it be. If your hair is curly, rock it. If you loooove to heat-style your hair, then perhaps take a few days off throughout the week or even save the straightening or curling for special occasions (though I'd still recommend allowing it to air dry).
+ Heating the hair also takes tiiiiiime. As you read above, I prefer to shower at night, which allows my hair to air-dry overnight. With the tips I mention in this video, I'm able to gain the texture and volume needed to wake up with a great look—meaning I just saved 15-45 mins normally spent on blow-drying, straightening, and/or curling!
Let's begin with the basics—shampoo and conditioner. I'm a believer in mixing, matching, and alternating products, so I try to have at least 2 different brands in my shower at all times. My current favorite is (literally) golden. An eco-chic line of luxurious clean hair care, Rahua (pronounced Ra-Wa) does it right.
Rahua Voluminous Shampoo & Conditioner
+ Ingredients: Shampoo: Water, Herbal Infusion of Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Lemongrass) Extract* and Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract*, Coco Betaine, Sodium Chloride (Sea salt), Saccharum Officinarum (Molasses) Extract, Glycerin, Caprylic Acid, Glycine, Oenocarpus Bataua (Rahua Ungurahua) Oil, Hydrolyzed Quinoa, Potassium Sorbate (plant derived), Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil*, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil*, Citric Acid, Panthenol, Chlorophyll. Conditioner: Water, Herbal Infusion of Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract*, Camellia Sinensis (Green tea) Leaf Extract*, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract*, and Robus Ideous (Raspberry) Leaf Extract*, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (Colza Oil), Oenocarpus Bataua (Rahua Ungurahua) Oil, Glyceryl Stearate, Canola Oil, Glycerin, Stearalkonium Chloride (plant derived), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Saccharum Officinarum (Molasses) Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Bursera Graveolens (Palo Santo) Oil, Potassium Sorbate (plant derived), Hydrolyzed Quinoa, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Panthenol. *Organic
+ Experience: A lovely eco-friendly brand, Rahua wins my heart quickly with their packaging (of course), but more importantly with their indigenously-sourced ingredients. Their high-quality key ingredient—Rahua oil, the source of the company name—is a traditional oil used by the native women of the Amazon rainforest. Rahua honors their rituals with the oil and even goes so far as to extract and use it in the same manner as these women did for centuries. Their care for the story of their product and its accumulation is impressive. To learn more about their process and entire line of hair care products, visit their site here.
I chose to pair the voluminous shampoo with the original conditioner because I like a fresh and cleansing shampoo that doesn't leave my hair heavy, but I also appreciate a conditioner that nourishes and protect my locks. I found that using a voluminous version of shampoo and conditioner can be too drying, so I avoid it in the conditioner. After using this rebellious pairing, my scalp is balanced and my hair is shiny and bouncy! I've been so happy with the results!
+ How-To: Pour a quarter-size amount into palm and lather, massaging deeply into the crown of your head and hairline to lift any grime or build up. Then pour a second nickel-size amount and massage from the base of your neck to the crown of your head. Rinse immediately and quickly follow up with a quarter-size dollop of the conditioner, running it through your locks from the ears down, focusing mostly on the ends. With a second smaller nickel-size portion, run it from your forehead all the way through to your ends. This should sit in your hair for at least 5-10 min—a great time to shave the ole' legs. Once finished, rinse it out thoroughly with medium temp water and finish with one cold temp water for shiny locks.
Now, once I've washed and conditioned my hair, I will towel dry and spritz my hair with this lovely sea spray! It's the only post-shower hair product I use.
John Masters Organics Sea Mist Spray
+ Ingredients: Water, Sodium Chloride (Sea Salt)*, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil*. *Organic
+ Experience: There are maaaany sea salt spray options out there. I just like this one because of the simple and pure ingredient list. It works well and never leaves my hair crunchy, giving me the same result from one quick jump in the ocean. John Masters Organics created a winner with this one :).
+ How-To: Hold at least 6 inches from locks and spray from your ears down, lifting the top layers of the hair to get to the underlying layers and scrunching the hair with your free hand. Do one or two sprays near the roots, then finish by pushing the hair up and scrunching all over with your hands. Throw it up in a gentle bun with a soft fabric tie or a light-holding clip, then lay in bed and release the hold (keeping the loose shape of the bun resting on your pillow up above your head as you sleep).
The last product that I use (often on that 3rd day when I'm going an extra day without washing) is a great way to keep your hair looking fresh!
Primally Pure Textured Dry Shampoo in Dark Locks
+ Ingredients: Cocoa Powder*, Kaolin Clay, Arrowroot Powder*, Baking Soda, Essential Oils of Grapefruit*, Lavender* and Peppermint*. *Organic
+ Experience: Ever since I discovered dry shampoo I've been a fan! I prefer the powder to be colored so that it doesn't leave my hair looking ashy. Primally Pure's does just the trick! If you're new to Primally Pure, learn more about them here. If you've been following along for a while, you know that I'm obsessed with this brand! You'd bode well to check out their entire line of skincare products too! Primally Pure offers variations for light or dark colored locks, so I went for the dark and it was a great match. The ingredients are organic and simple. The essential oils leave my hair smelling fresh (the huz often comments on how nice I smell after using it). At times, I do need to double check that the cocoa-colored powder hasn't dusted onto my face, but that's an easy enough step for me. Basically, it's a major keeper in my book!
+ How-To: Apply to any area that looks flat or greasy. Either tap into your hand and use fingers to apply or gently tap the powder directly on to the area needing some love. I often apply along my part, hair line, and at the crown of my head. Once applied, use your fingers to blend the powder into the area well. Your hair should look refreshed and lifted, smelling lightly of peppermint :).
