Authentic Calm is my term for a healing state of body, mind and spirit. It is ultimately the place of balance and rest in the here and now that can persist through any and all circumstances. Instead of suppression or overexertion, it invites us into the space of genuine equilibrium. A place where we account for our breath, thoughts and life energy as the foundational elements of health.
In school I was taught to look at the foundations of the body as an indicator of health, while I agree these are critical to consider when assessing symptoms, I kept feeling as though some piece was missing. I could generally address digestion, blood sugar imbalance or hydration and see improvements, but not full recovery and more often than not see relapse. It seemed as though I was at the right door with the right tools, but it was locked. Why?
I needed the key.
The key, the prerequisite, the required element for the door to unlock and allow me, and perhaps you, through was the necessity of being in a state of authentic calm to see true lasting change.
This place of genuine rest throughout every aspect of your being cannot be acquired only through physical change or only through thought change or dare I say only through spiritual change. We are the whole makeup of all these things, therefore they must all shift to match our authentic personhood – how we are created to live and breathe and express ourselves on this earth.
How do we cultivate an authentic calm within ourselves? Well, we first need to be ready to dive deep – become aware of our tendencies and habitual behaviors, open up to both receive and release, honor our origin, acknowledge Divinity and make space in our bodies to cultivate a balanced autonomic nervous system.
So what does this look like IRL? I believe it looks like using the tools we’ve naturally been given in ourselves and on this planet. There are many methods that can be used. Mine is woven into a 4 stage process using supportive tools that I have come to personally use and love. A few examples of them include the use of plants to activate the brain’s ability to change and rewire, breath to engage our bodies natural state of healing and nourishing nutrients to support life energy. This is but a glimpse into the possibilities. They all lead to one result when combined synergistically – the cultivation of an authentic calm that can allow more traditional approaches to be effective and guide us home to true whole and healthy selves.
Our world is full of beautiful tools to enact authentic calm, so why aren’t we seeing whole vibrant healthy people around us? I have many theories, but the most consistent reason I see with clients and even in my own life is overwhelm. I recommend selecting a few tools that resonate with you and address each aspect of your personhood, make these your go-tos for moving forward. If this is still anxiety-inducing, bring in a friend, partner or consultant to support you.
This is a lifelong journey of uncovering and honoring the incredible being that you are. It’s a true art form. One I believe we all must cultivate.
