A stabilizing, nourishing start to your day, I am a huge advocate for sipping high-quality bone broth every morning. I often advise my clients to drink a cup a day within 30-60 minutes of waking. I personally started incorporating this on a more consistent basis (as in every morning) at the beginning of 2019. It’s been 6+ months and I’m still loving it, even in the summer months. I am a bit odd in that I’m always excited for a warm drink. I rarely drink cold liquids as I know they can tighten and shock the digestive tract - your intestines literally tighten up from the cold! For my warm blooded friends, I admit and acknowledge that there are days that are just too toasty for a mug of steaming broth. That’s why I’ve created a lovely smoothie recipe for you to still get the benefit of that daily bone broth without sweating as soon as you drink it! I just have a few caveats for you…
Healthy Smoothie Drinking & Eating Advice
Always “chew” your smoothie.
I literally mean open and close your mouth (lips can stay sealed) to trigger saliva production. Your saliva has enzymes in it called Amylase that will begin to break down the carbohydrates in your smoothie so that they do not ferment in the stomach or small intestine. It will also activate the mechanisms of your entire digestive system, getting it ready and prepared for a smooth processing of your food. This is key to a healthy gut which dictates the health of your body.
Eat with a spoon as often as possible.
Smoothies are easy to take on the go, but I encourage you to sit and eat your smoothie with a spoon instead of sipping rapidly through a straw on the way to work or at your desk. Be aware of how quickly you’re consuming. Slow down. I’ll be first to admit, this is tough! It’s so so so easy to be quick with breakfast or even skip it. Intermittent fasting is trendy anyways right? Another topic for another day… Eating breakfast sitting down (away from driving or work, if possible) is an easy way to provide a solid foundation for a healthy future.
Listen to your body.
Ingredient Recipes are guidelines… feel free to play with the ingredients, but listen to how your body responds to the shifts. If you add more fruit or swap out the coconut cream for raw cow cream, notice your mental aptitude and your energy levels following the meal. Are you a little mentally foggy? Are you hyper and then crash? Hungry sooner or later after the smoothie? Adding more protein or fat will help you last longer energy-wise, but you also don’t want to fully eliminate your liver’s preferred energy fuel - fructose. Balance is key, but you’re playing to find your unique definition of balance. In other words, don’t eliminate macronutrients like protein, carbs or fat, use them all, but experiment to see what amounts of each are necessary for you to feel satiated and in a state of calm and clarity. Does this make sense? If not, comment below and I’ll do my best to help you navigate it!
I’m not perfect and you don’t have to be either, but try to incorporate these guidelines as much as possible in your everyday to receive the full nourishment found in this smoothie. You can do it! Enjoy!
